Co-Owner & Head Instructor, VSSL Union
With nearly two decades of coaching experience, Jason Aquino brings a deep passion for Jiu Jitsu and a proven track record of developing students from white belt to brown belt and beyond. His journey began at Kaizen Martial Arts Academy in Northern California, where he served as both Coach and Enrollment Director from 2006 to 2013. There, he led youth and adult programs, organized belt advancement camps, and played a key role in growing the academy.
After relocating to Hawai‘i, Jason became a core instructor at Island Jiu Jitsu, heading the 6:00 AM program and mentoring students across all levels. From 2014 to 2020, he expanded his reach through seminars and workshops, helping students build solid foundations and technical depth.
In 2020, he founded Sojourn Jiu Jitsu, an independent academy dedicated to youth and adult development. As Head Instructor, Jason designed and led a curriculum that promotes personal growth, discipline, and technical excellence—earning him recognition for building a strong children’s program and guiding students through their belt ranks with intention and care.
Now, as co-owner of VSSL Union, Jason combines his Jiu Jitsu expertise with a vision for inclusive, cross-disciplinary training. His approach blends traditional martial arts values with modern coaching strategies, making him a respected leader both on and off the mats.
